Learning Made Fun at MOHAI /learning-made-fun-at-mohai/ Mon, 28 Mar 2022 00:00:00 +0000 /learning-made-fun-at-mohai/ The Museum of History and Industry, aka MOHAI, offers a deep dive into how Seattle evolved from its earliest days to now. A mix of pictures, artifacts and hands-on exhibits make this indoor museum fascinating for those of all ages. And, a fun thing to do in Seattle — no matter the weather.

How did Seattle get established? What were the first neighborhoods like? What’s the deal with the big red R? And have seaplanes always landed on Lake Union?

A mix of pictures, artifacts and hands-on exhibits make this indoor museum fascinating for those of all ages. And, a fun thing to do in Seattle — no matter the weather.

The Grand Atrium is a breathtaking introduction. From its rafters a Boeing B-1 is suspended. One of the first seaplanes to regularly land and take off from Lake Union, it was used to fly mail from Seattle to Victoria, British Columbia from 1920 to 1927.

Glowing behind the plane’s tail is the 12-foot tall Rainier ‘R.’ The iconic sign was originally at the Old Rainier Brewery in 𲹳ٳٱ’s Industrial District, where it could be seen from I-5. At its nose, a 165-foot wooden sculpture rises from the ground to the ceiling. Carved from the salvaged wood of a schooner built in 1896, visitors can walk the half-moon interior, finding a skylight at its tip and a window at the floor, peering down to the sculpture’s base where it dips into the waters of Lake Union.

A suggested path can be found on the museum’s floor by following a series of orange dots and arrows. These helpful markers allow you to explore the museum’s collection of permanent and rotating exhibits in chronological order.

From the Grand Atrium, the guided path takes you to the second floor on the northern edge of the building. A series of extensive permanent exhibits have been engagingly constructed in several spaces. The displays are speckled with window views of Lake Union.

A variety of interactive displays invite visitors to try their luck at an ancient slot machine, move logs through a sawmill, help boats pass through the Ballard Locks and more! The second-floor displays continue, wrapping around the entire Grand Atrium along a terrace walkway.

The third floor features the Kids Construction Zone, a large play space filled with learning toys and small windows to Lake Union. The top story is the Maritime exhibit — a beautiful space generously filled with daylight and views. A captain’s wheel marks the space’s helm and at the room’s core is a submarine periscope.

Seattle Underground Tour

Did you know, 𲹳ٳٱ’s original neighborhood has long been evacuated? It rests one story beneath the surface of Pioneer Square. Seattle Boat Tours

With 200 miles of shoreline, boating is as quintessential to 𲹳ٳٱ’s culture as rain and coffee. From elegant crew boats and majestic sailboats to casual paddle boarders and intriguing houseboat communities, the city’s eclectic array of water vessels is as diverse as its inhabitants.

Arguably the most popular Seattle boat tours are offered by . They depart from several different docks throughout the city, not the least of which is on Lake Union, right next to 51鶹’s terminal.

Pike Place Market

Seattle Food Tours

While the Michelin star isn’t applied to cities in the Pacific Northwest, 𲹳ٳٱ’s foodie culture has established a reputation as a foodie destination. In 2019, it was named among the Top 10 foodie cities in the United States and its chefs have brought home more than 20 James Beard awards. This is thanks largely to the region embracing the principles of farm-to-table, sea-to-table, and nose-to-tail cooking.

Nowhere are these ideals more present than at 𲹳ٳٱ’s Pike Place Market, where everyday shoppers rub elbows with chefs shopping for the freshest of the fresh. There are a plethora of food tours from which to choose. One of the most popular is , which offers chef-guided walking tours through the market, sharing bits of history and bites along the way.

Looking for a self-guided tour? Check out our roundup of the best doughnut spots in Seattle!

Orca Tail

Seattle Whale Watching Tours

Viral images of orcas making their way into Elliott Bay may have you dreaming of whale watching from 𲹳ٳٱ’s downtown pier. But these sightings are few and far between. The famed resident orcas, and the equally stunning transient orcas, tend to stick to the waters around the San Juan Islands. So too do the grey whales, humpback whales, minke whales, dolphins, and porpoises. Seeing these majestic creatures and a host of other wildlife, like bald eagles, typically requires a trip to the outer reaches of Washington’s coast and beyond.

While day tours depart from the downtown Seattle waterfront, a quick scenic flight to Friday Harbor offers treats passengers to a scenic view of the coastline and surrounding area. And from there, a whale watching tour with San Juan Safaris has a 90% success rate at spotting whales while on the water.

Mount St. Helens’ Topless 40th Birthday

Mount St. Helens is a living, breathing — topless — giant. When she blew, the volcano forever changed the landscape of Washington State. And the steam that periodically arises from her cratered head reminds us that even 40 years later, she’s still very much alive.

In the months leading up to the catastrophic eruption, consistent seismic activity was recorded on the grounds surrounding the volcano. Plumes of steam were seen shooting from its top, sometimes as high as 6,000 feet into the air. Its shape changed, as the north side bulged out roughly 450 feet in a nearly horizontal direction.

The catastrophic eruption climaxed on May 18, 1980. It demolished 1,300 feet of the volcano’s summit. The formerly symmetrical cone became a 2-mile-wide crater.

Mount St. Helens Eruption by Austin Post

The subsequent flow of debris and mud (known as lahar) destroyed 230 square miles of forests and meadows. It continued its roll all the way to the Columbia River, taking it 17 miles from the mountain and over terrain that was 600 feet deep in places.

The blast generated roughly 500 times the force of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima and claimed 57 lives. It sent massive ash clouds soaring more than 60,000 feet into the air. Caught by wind, the burnt particles blew eastward with such density that in Yakima they blocked the sun.

Today, scientists consider the cratered beauty a world-class outdoor laboratory. The landscape is the epitome of re-birth.

Plants that survive off nitrogen absorbed through the air, rather than the soil, were the first to take root among the ash. Gradually the hillsides became scattered with wildflowers and prairie land. Animals and insects returned. Deciduous trees spread their leaves and have gradually started giving way to re-growth of old-growth forests. It’s a sight to behold.

Will Mount St. Helens Blow Again?

Yes. The only question is when. Thanks to Mount St. Helens location on the Cascadian Subduction Zone, another eruption is inevitable.

While predicting the eruption is extremely difficult to predict, scientists are keeping a close watch on all the volcanos in the Pacific Northwest — including Mount St. Helens. Key data, like jumps in seismic activity, offer warning signals. And to this date, all activity surrounding the volcano have been within normal range.

Tasty Treats Worth an Early-Morning Bell

𲹳ٳٱ’s food scene has long been known for its seafood. Salmon, in particular, is so woven into the city’s culinary identity tourists routinely converge on the corner of Pike and Pike to duck the flying king of fish. And while local chefs have embraced the farm-to-table movement with such gusto the city celebrated 23 James Beard Nominations in 2019 — a few chefs have turned their eye toward an often-overlooked fried delight.

Doughnuts (also spelled donuts, depending on your preference).

These amazing men and women knead, rise, bake, and fry with such attention to detail their shops sometimes close early due to lack of inventory. The fact that Seattle has embraced so many of these delightful little morning destinations isn’t something that should come as a major surprise. The Emerald City has a long history of loving sugar-loaded morning fare. It was the Belgian waffle that first earned Seattle a culinary reputation. Introduced during the 1962 World’s Fair the strawberry-topped, airy waffle quickly became the event’s major attraction.

But when stacked against bowls of steaming ramen and duck-fat fried oxtails, the doughnut is often overshadowed. Plus, it’s a unique soul who willingly braves the dawn — even if doughnuts are on the menu.

Half and Half Doughnuts

As luck would have it, many a Seattle-resident is unique enough to answer the early-morning-bell. Though lines at top doughnut shops are sometimes long, the AM crowds have proven to be relatively jovial. Laughter often ripples from friend to stranger like a seamless wave. And doughnut hawkers are filled with equally good spirits, making these neighborhood hubs the kind of pick-me-up watering hole that brings you back time and time again.

Making Waves with Hand-Forged Doughnuts

Arriving before the crowd, opened in 2002. It made waves with its hand-forged cake-like delights. Since then the regional empire has grown to more than 20 locations, including three outposts in Texas and a regular spot in the bakery of local grocery store chain QFC.

Mighty-O

One year later, joined Top Pot. Having expanded from its street fair and wholesale origins, the vegan chain opened its first brick-and-mortar location in 2003. Another cake-doughnut delight, the glazed and sprinkled chemical-free menu is so tasty even those without dietary restrictions frequent its doughnut counters.

Bringing Brioche-Style Goodness to the Seattle Doughnut Scene

General Porpoise

But it would be more than 20 years until 𲹳ٳٱ’s doughnut crusade was truly shaken up again. Spearheaded by Seattle restauranteur Renee Erickson, the arrival of in 2015 was met with well-deserved praise. The yeasted doughnuts come stuffed with all manner of jams, jellies, custards, and curds. Though her mainstays like Chocolate Marshmallow and Lemon Curd are tried-and-true favorites, seasonal specialties like Peaches and Cream and Plum Jam are equally as delightful.

Creative Twists on Doughnut Classics

Raised Doughnuts

Joining the sweet brigade in 2018, pastry chef Mi Kim opened with a flair for elevated flavors. Her varieties range from classics like maple bars and apple fritters to “raised” varieties like raspberry holes and sugar-covered mochi.

Newest, though definitely not least, to the city’s ‘coveted doughnut destinations’ is which opened in the former Sun Liquor Distillery on Capitol Hill. Offerings include pineapple fritters and Mexican hot chocolate old fashioneds.

And then there’s the underground donut train. Comprised of shops tucked in strip malls and scattered throughout 𲹳ٳٱ’s suburbs, these joints have developed such cult-like followings that city dwellers regularly drive 20-plus minutes for the fried goods. Chuck’s Donuts is the leader of the pack. Its handcrafted maple bars feature a whipped frosting so creamy an excited patron once drove through the front door just to get one. Crown Donut in Maple Valley has a French Curler with a rippled exterior that gives way to a delightfully soft bite. And in Monroe, Fresh & Fancy Doughnuts makes a mean blueberry fritter.

So while the humble doughnut is unlikely to earn Seattle its 24th James Beard Nomination in 2020, it’s certainly giving us all more than one sweet reason to wake up early.

Delectable Pastries

The Pacific Northwest is known for its fresh seafood and lush mountainscapes. But speckled throughout its cities and destinations, you’ll also find baked delectables that’ll make you want to ooh and aah.

Holly B’s on Lopez Island

On an island known for its slow pace, there’s no more delicious way to pass the time than sinking your teeth into a butter-baked treat. For 43 years, small kitchen has turned out a selection of pastries and breads that have developed a cult-like following among locals and tourists alike. While Stephanie and Rory Smith bought the business in 2016 when they moved to Lopez, the island-owned and operated shop remains true to its “love and butter” ethos. Today, you’ll find the same butterhorns and cinnamon rolls that have been popular since the shop opened. But, you’ll also be treated to some new selections inspired by Stephanie’s travels, like her savory rolls loaded with spinach, onions, mushrooms, Kalamata olives, and feta!

Brown Bear Baking on Orcas Island

Taking an age-old advertisement approach, Brown Bear Baking frequently perfumes the southern edge of Eastsound with its buttery kouign-amanns and gooey sticky buns. But the proof is in the treat and these treats have been delivering since the local shop opened in 2013. Lines are frequently longer than you’d expect on an island and the daily selection is known to quickly dwindle, but as long as there’s something left in the case, it’s hard to go wrong. From the orange-scented morning buns and peach croissants to caramelized banana bread and salmon quiche, you’ll want to come hungry.

Fol Epi in Victoria

this Victoria BC favorite opened its Dockside location in 2009. Its commitment to farm-to-table cuisine is so deep it maintains two silos where Red Fife wheat—bought directly from Saskatchewan farmers—is stored. Thanks to its wild popularity, it opened a second location in 2015. At the front you’ll find the expected breads and pastries and at the back is Agrius, the contemporary dinner hot spot known for its seasonally-inspired menu.

Café Demeter on San Juan Island

If it wasn’t for the steady stream of patrons, you might miss Café Demeter. The humble bakery is housed in one of Friday Harbor’s historic homes. Built in the 1920s, the small kitchen turns out an impressive selection of baked treats — including twice-baked almond croissants, seasonal Danish, and daily pizza specials.

Bakery Sate in Vancouver

Check the artificial flavorings at the door. Head Pastry Chef and Owner, Eric Ho’s all-natural menu is crafted in the traditional fresh style at . Each drool-worthy pastry, cookie, and individually-sized cake is made fresh daily. Best known for its selection of croissants, you’ll find the expected characters like Butter and Chocolate nestled next to untraditional bedfellows, like Coconut and Banana Chocolate Hazelnut Bread Pudding.

Coyles Bakeshop

Tucked in 𲹳ٳٱ’s Greenwood neighborhood, But one bite of a Coyle creation and you’ll quickly attempt to sample the entire daily spread. Which, thanks to her many ‘mini’ variations, like her mini cardamom kouign amann, you may have room for a few! Formerly the pastry chef for notable Seattle-renowned restaurants like The Herbfarm and Le Pichet, the shop opened in 2015. The menu has expanded over the years, now including sandwiches, salads, and soups. But really, it’s the pastries—the seasonal fruit galettes, luscious bundt cakes, and millionaire shortbread that steal—the show.
